How do you clean a hot water heater gas burner?

Follow these steps to clean your water heater's gas burner:

  • Douse ignition sources near the water heater. Add ventilation by opening the windows and doors
  • Turn off the gas heater control knob and shut-off valve. Let the combustion chamber cool off
  • Use an adjustable wrench to disconnect the pilot and manifold tubes and thermocouple.
  • Take off the door at the water heater base and remove the ignitor. Use a nut driver to remove the manifold door.
  • Use a brush to remove debris from the burner ports. Clean the combustion chamber interior, circular flame arrestor's exposed piece, and cavity between the flame arrestor and burner with the brush attachment on a vacuum.
  • Wipe the bottom part of the flame arrestor with a damp cloth.
  • Remove the air intake screen and vacuum up debris and dust.
  • Add the burner assembly and tube back to the heater. Reconnect the manifold and pilot tubes and thermocouple.
  • Replace the ignitor and outer door; tighten up the inner door. Turn on the gas burner control and shutoff valve and light the pilot flame
