Resin helps remove magnesium and calcium in hard water to make it softer. When hard water flows through the resin, it creates an ion exchange where the soft ions on the resin beads trade places with the hard ions to remove the chemicals and produce soft water.
Replace water softener resin every ten years. If the resin is regularly exposed to high iron, chlorine, or hard water, replace it every five years.
